Hong Kong Youth 3D Animation Competition 2008
"Space Games 2108"

A briefing is scheduled for 28 June (Saturday) at Cyberport, during which participants will be briefed on the technical specifications required for the entries and details of the training sessions. Objectives:

  1. To provide opportunity for the younger generation to showcase their talent and develop their potentials in innovation, technology and design through the promotion of 3D animation technology.
  2. To enhance awareness in the community the importance of creative education and creative industries.

Divisions

There are three divisions: Primary, Junior Secondary and Senior Secondary.

  1. For Primary Division, students compete on individual basis.
  2. For the two Secondary Divisions, students compete in teams, with each team comprising 1 to 4 students. While students of the same team can come from different forms, Form 1 to Form 3 students could only join Junior Secondary Division and Form 4 to Form 7 students could only join Senior Secondary Division.
Note: Each team must be led by a teacher. Each teacher may lead more than one team while each student can join one team only. Each team can only submit one entry.

 

Requirements

  1. The entry must be composed with a 3D software. 3D software will be provided to the participants for free by Autodesk®, the Official Software Provider, during the competition period.
  2. The entry must be composed with graphics. While subtitle cannot be included, graphics with text effects such as ¡§BANG!!!¡¨, ¡§Wow!!¡¨ are acceptable.
  3. To ensure fairness, the identity of the school and the participants (e.g. insignia and name of school, name of participants, etc.) cannot be showcased in any format in the entry.
  4. All entries must be original, have never been released and not infringe rights (including copyright) of others.
  5. The entry must not contain any objectionable, indecent or defamatory contents.

 

Specifications

Primary Division
(Primary 1-6)

  1. The entry should be submitted in .jpg format together with its source files.
  2. Compose animation files with 3D software. Then select one representative shot for printing with a resolution of no less than 1024 x 768 pixels and save it in .jpg format.

Junior Secondary Division
(Form 1- Form 3)

  1. The entry should be submitted in computer-playable animation files in .avi format together with its source files. The resolution of the images should be 768 x 576 pixels. The maximum duration of the animation is 2 minutes at 30 fps with background sound effects.
  2. Then select one representative shot from the animation for printing with a resolution no less than 1024 x 768 pixels and save it in .jpg format.

Senior Secondary Division
(Form 4- Form 7)

  1. The entry should be submitted in computer-playable animation files in .avi format together with its source files. The resolution of the images should be 768 x 576 pixels. The maximum duration of the animation is 4 minutes at 30 fps with background sound effects.
  2. Then select two representative shots from the animation, for printing with a resolution no less than 1024 x 768 pixels and save them in .jpg format.

 

Judging criteria

Primary Division
(Primary 1-6)

  1. Content and creative concepts ¢w 30%
  2. Art and design (including the design of the objects and the use of colours, etc.) ¢w 30%
  3. Techniques (including the difficulty in composing the objects) ¢w 40%

Secondary Division
(Form 1 - Form 7)

  1. Content and creative concepts ¢w 30%
  2. Art and design (including the design of the objects, the use of colours, scenic design, camera skills, etc.) ¢w 30%
  3. Technique (including the difficulty in composing the 3D objects, the use of materials, animation techniques, background music/sound effect, etc.) ¢w 40%

 

Entry procedures

  1. Interested parties should complete the entry form and return it to the Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association Science Innovation Centre on or before 13 June 2008 by mail (21 Hong Kin Road, Tui Min Hoi Area, Sai Kung) or by fax: 2792 0286. Participants will receive an acknowledgement email, and be notified to attend various activities by email.
  2. The entry should be submitted together with its source files and must be stored in a DVD. The title and the file name of the entry must be clearly specified on the DVD.
  3. Deadline for submission of entries: 5:00 pm, 8 October 2008 (Wednesday)
  4. Venue for submission:

  5. Under no circumstance will the organisers be responsible for any damage or loss of the works and/or the videos submitted by the entrants.
  6. All entries will not be returned. Participants should make copies of their own.

 

Prizes

Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards will be granted for each division and the number of awards granted depends on the standard of entries. Winners will be awarded with trophies, certificates of award and prizes.
