20 May is the World Metrology Day!

Metrology is the science of measurement. Measurement is of vital importance to nearly all aspects of our society. To celebrate the signing of the Metre Convention by representatives of seventeen nations on 20 May 1875 in Paris, 20 May is known as the World Metrology Day. The Metre Convention is a treaty under which formal agreements are made on units of measurement and their realisations, as well on other matters related to the world's measurement system. There are now 51 Member States of the Metre Convention, covering the world's major economies.

2008 is a year of Olympic Games. The theme of the World Metrology Day 2008 is ¡§No games without measurement¡¨ aimed at bringing out the message that precise measurement is vital in today's sports and genuinely important to today's athletes. For more details, please see the BIPM webpage.
