Collaborate, Complement, Co-create: Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Forum 2017

Jointly organised by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) and the Innovation and Technology Bureau, the Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Forum 2017 was successfully held on September 25 in Hong Kong Science Park. The Forum aims to promote the development of innovation and technology in the Mainland and Hong Kong through facilitating complementary innovative edges and deeper integration of resources between the two places. The 20th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR brought a special meaning to the theme of the Forum, "Collaborate, Complement, Co-create".

The 50th Joint School Science Exhibition a great success – Secondary school students showcase scientific talent for the betterment of the community

The 50th Joint School Science Exhibition (JSSE) was successfully held from August 24 to 28 at the Hong Kong Central Library Exhibition Gallery. As a joint school science competition with the longest history in Hong Kong, JSSE's mission is to promote academic interaction among schools. It also provides an important opportunity for students to gain valuable real-life experiences and serves as a platform for the public to learn more about the latest science innovations which can be used in their everyday lives. From a total of 32 local secondary schools which registered this year, 23 teams were selected to take part in the final competition.

Standards and Calibration Laboratory wins the Best Paper Award at the NCSLI Symposium 2017

The Standards and Calibration Laboratory (SCL) is honored to receive the Best Paper Award at the National Conference of Standards Laboratories International (NCSLI) Symposium 2017 held on August 13-17, 2017 in Maryland, USA. The NCSLI Symposium is a prestigious international conference with participants from the national laboratories, testing laboratories, metrology industry and academia from around the world. This is the fifth time that the SCL has received the Best Paper Awards in international journals or conferences.

Innovation and Technology Venture Fund now opens for applications

The Innovation and Technology Commission launched a HK$2 billion Innovation and Technology Venture Fund (ITVF) on September 15. The ITVF welcomes applications from venture capital (VC) funds, whether incorporated in Hong Kong or overseas, to become its co-investment partners.

Fun with Science
Smart windows switched from clear to dark within a minute

There are different kinds of smart windows in the market. However, most of them take more than 20 minutes to dim, and become less opaque over a period of time. Engineers from Stanford University in the United States have developed smart windows that can be switched between transparent and opaque with a touch of button within a minute, and do not degrade easily over time.

Upcoming I&T Event  

  1. "InnoTech Month 2017" will be officially launched soon. A specially designed mobile truck, "InnoForce", will be travelling throughout Hong Kong for two weeks from September 30 with a robot ambassador and VR game. Members of general public will have a chance to get a limited edition of McMug plush toy by participating in a Facebook game. Please stay tuned!

    "InnoTech 2017" will be held from October 21 to 29 at Hong Kong Science Park. Welcome to register via www.itm.gov.hk for the innovative workshops, seminars and guided tours.
  2. The Nano and Advanced Materials Institute (NAMI) will hold a symposium on October 4 at Hong Kong Science Park, entitled "Emerging Eco-friendly Concrete Materials – Geopolymer". Research experts from NAMI and Prof. Joseph Davidovits, the inventor of geopolymer science, will share their achievements in the field of geopolymers, revealing the status, applications and markets of these emerging eco-friendly concrete materials.
