Patented Modular Timing Device for Time‑Interval Measurement
Accurate time interval measurement underpins quality and reliability across diverse sectors, from secure telecommunications and flawless audio‑video synchronisation to repeatable manufacturing workflows and precise power delivery.
The Standards and Calibration Laboratory (SCL) has continually advanced its time‑interval measurement capability through continuous research and development. Recently, SCL developed a Modular Timing Device, consisting of a Digital Control Module and LED Modules, designed specifically for high‑precision time‑interval measurement. By cascading LED modules with the control module, the device forms a scalable timing system.
Synchronised to the laboratory’s caesium clock and driven by customised control signals, the device provides highly discriminative timing indications through its LED display. Its modular architecture offers notable advantages in scalability, flexibility, and ease of deployment.
The invention was granted a Hong Kong patent in May 2026. Building on this technology, SCL further developed a 10‑digit reference timer for time‑interval calibration, achieving a nominal timing resolution of 0.001 s. This demonstrates a practical and valuable hardware solution enabled by the patented design.
