Measurement Symposium 2016 Quality Management and its Impact on Metrology
The Measurement Symposium 2016, an annual function of the SCL-OUHK Measurement Club (the Club), was held on 28 October 2016. This year's event was jointly organised by the Standards and Calibration Laboratory (SCL) and the Hong Kong Council for Testing and Certification (HKCTC) of the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC), and the School of Science and Technology (SST) of the Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK). The symposium was attended by Mr Kesson Lee, the Secretary-General of the HKCTC, Prof Ho Kin Chung, Dean of the SST of the OUHK, Mr Wong Ming Yam, Chairman of the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) and more than 180 participants from over 65 companies and organisations.

The keynote speech was given by Mr Wong Ming Yam on the importance of metrology to advanced research development. The experience of converting ASTRI's research and development projects into new products was shared to illustrate the importance of quality management and metrology in the design and manufacturing phase. Other speakers from SCL and OUHK presented topics related to quality management and its impact on the importance of metrology. At the podium, over 40 posters showcased published technical developments of SCL. Participants engaged enthusiastically in the interactive discussions on related topics during the poster session.

At the symposium, Mr Dennis Lee, Head of SCL, and Dr George Lau, Programme Leader of the Testing and Certification Department (TCD) of the OUHK, announced the launching of the fifth measurement sub-group on Quality Management Systems (QMS). This new sub-group provides a platform for experience and knowledge sharing on QMS and uncertainty estimation issues. With the four specialised metrology area sub-groups and the QMS sub-group, the Club will be able to cover all essential areas of measurement that are required by the industry.
