In April 2018, five research and development (R&D) centres under the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC) – Automotive Parts and Accessory Systems R&D Centre (APAS), Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI), Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA), Hong Kong R&D Centre for Logistics and Supply Chain Management Enabling Technologies (LSCM), and Nano and Advanced Materials Institute (NAMI) – achieved remarkable results at the 46th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva. All told, a total of 36 awards were received this year, reflecting great efforts and contributions by Hong Kong in applied research. Mr. Nicolas Yang, Secretary for Innovation and Technology, showed his full support and congratulated to the winners at the HKRITA's press briefing.

The following projects developed by the participating R&D centres were awarded gold medals with the congratulations of the jury:

ASTRI

• B-TrunC Base-station for Mission Critical Communications
• Advanced Safety Design for Rechargeable Battery
• Non-invasive Bloodless Glucometer

NAMI

• Super HEPA-grade Media to Filter PM2.5, Neutralise VOC and Kill Bacteria
  (This project was also granted the King Abdulaziz University Distinguished Innovation Award.)
• A Nano-fibre FIR Facial Mask for Skin Revitalisation and Enhanced Blood Circulation
• Antibacterial Dust-free Air Duct by Waterborne Nano-coating
• Anisotropic Thermal Management Pad for 5G System

The 46th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva, the most important innovation-related and professional exhibition in the world, was held from April 11 to 15, with more than 800 exhibitors from 40 countries showcasing their new innovations and inventions.

This year, under the auspices of the Hong Kong Federation of Invention and Innovation (HKFii), more than 100 representatives from various organisations in Hong Kong took part and showcased 98 invention projects, ranging from microbial technology that turns food waste into biodegradable plastic bags, to lip motion password technology for access control. The outstanding accomplishments from these organisations reinforce Hong Kong’s status as a city with a strong focus on innovation. Out of a thousand inventions on display from around the world, Hong Kong delegation achieved excellent results including 25 gold medals with the congratulations of the jury, 48 gold medals and 25 silver medals.
