HKSSPC marks its 20th anniversary with a strong finish at the 2018 Final Judging cum Award Presentation Ceremony
The Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition (HKSSPC) 2018 Final Judging cum Award Presentation Ceremony and Project Exhibition was successfully held on April 14 at the Hong Kong Science Park. The competition is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, the Education Bureau and the Hong Kong Science Museum, and supported by the Innovation and Technology Commission and Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation. Mr. Ivan Lee, the Deputy Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, was invited to present awards to the four champion teams of the competition.

In its 20th anniversary, HKSSPC 2018 was held under an inspirational theme “From Theory to Practice, Develop Science Potential”. A record-breaking number of applications was received with over 1,000 students in 300 teams from nearly 90 secondary schools. Twenty finalists from the Junior and Senior Divisions, who had demonstrated their innovative ideas, were selected at the initial judging. The final champions were unveiled at the award ceremony, by a professional panel of judges formed by scholars and experts from different sectors.

This year, “iKidney” from Pak Kau College and “Eggcellent Supercapacitor” from the Chinese Foundation Secondary School were named champions of the “Invention Project” and “Investigation Project” for the Senior Division respectively. For the Junior Division, the champions of “Invention Project” and “Investigation Project” were “Smart Elevator” and “Thermal Lifejacket – An Innovative Exothermic Flotation Device to Reduce Deaths from Hypothermic in Maritime Disasters” respectively, both teams are students from Shun Tak Fraternal Association Yung Yau College. In April 2018, five research and development (R&D) centres under the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC) – Automotive Parts and Accessory Systems R&D Centre (APAS), Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI), Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA), Hong Kong R&D Centre for Logistics and Supply Chain Management Enabling Technologies (LSCM), and Nano and Advanced Materials Institute (NAMI) – achieved remarkable results at the 46th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva. All told, a total of 36 awards were received this year, reflecting great efforts and contributions by Hong Kong in applied research. Mr. Nicolas Yang, Secretary for Innovation and Technology, showed his full support and congratulated to the winners at the HKRITA's press briefing.

The National Institute of Metrology (NIM) of China is a pioneer in radio frequency (RF) and microwave power metrology. In March 2018, Standards and Calibration Laboratory (SCL) has successfully transferred the technology from NIM to set up a new microcalorimeter system as the primary coaxial RF/microwave power measurement standard for Hong Kong. Experts from NIM, led by Prof Cui Xiaohai, helped to set up the system and provided technical exchange with the technical team in SCL.

Hong Kong Biotechnology Organisation (HKBIO) and Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) will co-organise a Hong Kong Delegation to promote Hong Kong's biotechnology industry by showcasing their innovative projects and providing business matching opportunities for local and overseas traders at the BIO International Convention 2018 (BIO 2018).
