The Government of the HKSAR Standards and Calibration Laboratory Sets Up New Calibration Services for Loop Antennas
The Government of the HKSAR Standards and Calibration Laboratory (SCL) has developed a new calibration service for loop antennas to support the testing and certification industries in Hong Kong. Loop antennas are often used for measuring the level of unwanted magnetic fields radiated from electronic devices during electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing.

The antenna factor specifies the ratio between the output voltage at the terminals of an antenna to the strength of the electric field or magnetic field present. The magnetic antenna factor of the loop antenna under test is calibrated by comparison with the Laboratory’s reference loop antennas in the transverse electromagnetic (TEM) cell. The TEM cell provides a uniform electromagnetic field in a shielded environment. The frequency measurement range is from 1 kHz to 30 MHz and the achieved calibration and measurement capability (CMC) is 1.9 dB.

In July 2017, this new calibration services was assessed by the Hong Kong Accreditation Service (HKAS) with overseas peer reviewer Dr Shan Yueyan, a principle metrologist of the National Measurement Centre (NMC), Singapore and an expert in radio frequency and microwave measurements. For more information about EMC related calibration services, please visit the SCL’s website at www.itc.gov.hk/scl.
