The 50th Joint School Science Exhibition (JSSE) was successfully held from August 24 to 28 at the Hong Kong Central Library Exhibition Gallery. As a joint school science competition with the longest history in Hong Kong, JSSE's mission is to promote academic interaction among schools. It also provides an important opportunity for students to gain valuable real-life experiences and serves as a platform for the public to learn more about the latest science innovations which can be used in their everyday lives. From a total of 32 local secondary schools which registered this year, 23 teams were selected to take part in the final competition.

With "Community" as this year's theme, the JSSE Preparation Committee aims to remind the public that the true meaning of science lies in the benefits it brings to the community, not just for personal gain. Belilios Public School was the champion of the Proposal Design Competition with its MTR cabin traffic light system. Using infrared technology, the system can help passengers determine the human traffic in each train cabin and bring better utilisation of cabin space and, greater safety and comfort for passengers.

The first runner-up was a self-closing ashtray designed by students from Homantin Government Secondary School. The device uses an ultrasound sensor to detect cigarette butts and closes the ashtray cover once they drop into the tray. The ashtray can stop smoke from dissipating and prevent fire hazards. St. Paul’s Secondary School was the second runner-up with a pedestrian traffic warning system which helps prevent road accidents.

In celebration of its 50th anniversary, JSSEPC has arranged a special display booth to review the founding and development of JSSE over the years.
