4 Champion Teams Stand Out in “Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition 2017” Final
On April 14 2017, four teams from Christian and Missionary Alliance Sun Kei Secondary School, Heep Yunn School and Hoi Ping Chamber of Commerce Secondary School, were selected as champions in the final round of the “Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition 2017” (HKSSPC). They received awards from Mr. Johann Wong, Deputy Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, and Mr. Kenneth Chen Wei-on, SBS, the Honorary Secretary of The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, at the award presentation ceremony.

The Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition is an annual competition for local secondary school students to present innovative research projects based on a chosen topic in the field of either “Biology and Chemistry” or “Physics and Engineering”. This year, a total of 266 teams formed by over 900 students from 83 secondary schools, enrolled to compete under the theme “From Theory to Practice • Developing Scientific Potential”. A total of 20 teams from the Junior and Senior Divisions were selected in the Initial Judging cum Exhibition held in March and were invited to proudly join the Final in April.

In the Senior Division, this winner of the Invention Projects category went to Christian and Missionary Alliance Sun Kei Secondary School with its project ‘Sign-translate Gloves’. ‘The Teeth Guardians’ presented by Heep Yunn School was named Investigation Projects Champion. In the Junior Division, Hoi Ping Chamber of Commerce Secondary School’s ‘OctoPLUS Wallet’ and Heep Yunn School’s ‘I’ve Bin Recycling Paper’ won the “Invention” and “Investigation” categories respectively.

The top four teams awarded in the final judging may be selected to participate in an overseas exchange programme in the hope of widening their horizons and gaining greater knowledge in science and technology.

The Competition, which jointly organised by The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, the Education Bureau and Hong Kong Science Museum, and supported by the Innovation and Technology Commission and Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks. HKSSPC aims to nurture young science talent, has been a core government-supported programme in Hong Kong since 1998. Please click here for details of the competition.
